Experience

Dr. Allison Winik is a licensed clinical psychologist specialized in the evaluation and treatment of anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, and disruptive behavior disorders. Before starting her own practice, she was an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at New York Presbyterian-Columbia University Irving Medical Center and a Senior Psychologist at the Columbia University Clinic for Anxiety and Related Disorders in Westchester (CUCARD-W). As a clinician at CUCARD-W, Dr. Winik treated clients of all ages presenting with complex anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, and mood disorders. She also coordinated CUCARD's College Readiness and Parent Management Training group programs, led workshops on the evidence-based treatment of anxiety and school avoidance for school and community professionals, provided consultation to local school districts on school-based anxiety, and supervised psychology trainees.

Approach

Dr. Winik believes that a strong, trusting therapist-client relationship is key to treatment success. She engages with clients in a warm, genuine, and validating manner, often using humor to facilitate comfort in the therapeutic relationship. As a proponent of evidence-based, solution-oriented practice, Dr. Winik relies on the strong rapport that she develops with clients to achieve treatment outcomes,  balancing warmth in the relationship with firmness on meeting treatment goals.  She approaches cases from a Cognitive-Behavioral (CBT) perspective and often incorporates mindfulness and acceptance strategies from Acceptance and Committment (ACT) and Dialectical Behavoral (DBT) therapies.  She works flexibly within these treatment modalities to ensure that she meets each client's unique needs.
